Watta Moriba is a 46-year-old single mother of five who lives in Gbeka. Like many mothers, Watta wanted to educate her children and save for the future. The family’s sole bread winner was her husband. Crisis hit in 2016 when Watta’s husband died, leaving her to fend for herself and her children.

It’s Never too Late to Dream Again
We met Ms. Hawa in 2022, in Nyandehun, a small community in rural Sierra Leone. By the time we arrived in this community, the women were already eager to learn and grow because in this community, families were broken, women were deep in debt and for Ms. Hawa, it seemed too late ever dream of change. When you meet Ms. Hawa for the first time, you will instantly fall in love with her. She is witty, sharp and so insightful.

Baindu Amara, a 40-old farmer lives in Magbema, a community situated in Eastern Sierra Leone with more than 900 inhabitants. Agriculture, especially upland and swampland rice farming, is the main economic activity of the people of Magbema. This is Baindu's story.

“When I first entered Bunumbu for the first time, I went to visit my best friend’s relative. Without knowing what I would encounter, nothing prepared me for the biggest hug I would ever receive. Very quickly, I realized everything I was told about people in rural Sierra Leone was wide of the mark. My grandma, as she insisted I call her, greeted me with a dance, with fresh pineapples, fresh mangoes to the point that I had to kindly deny the rest.”
Participatory Land Use Mapping
The Participatory Land Use Mapping Project empowers communities to understand their land and their land rights, understand conservation better, and be a part of national policy and dialogue. Using a community led approach, community members are placed in the driver’s seat on their land management.

Men as leaders largely excluded women from attending community meetings, and decision-making processes, which forced the women to take the back seat. Women became dependent on men and were largely discriminated against, which made them less confident to use their voices.
